on song

all day today, he sang, in joy, clearly in love… I couldn’t join in, listened and watched, envious.

walking into my building, thinking about his spontaneity, the way he kept breaking into song and incantation all day long, this suddenly started up, unsure at first, feeling my way along half-remembered words, not even recognising where they were going, which song it was, the verses all out of order:

diamonds in a ring of gold

harbour in a tempest

eyes in a moon of blindness

your love not to grow cold

your story to remain untold

and all the promises you make

from the cradle to the grave

when all I want is you
